Cafe de Waraku 和樂屋

When I first found out about this place I was super excited. Because finally you can get Japanese style pasta in Vancouver, they were the first one to open in Richmond (even though they are not opened by Japanese). This restaurant has been here for almost 4 to 5 years as I remember correctly, they used to only sell Japanese style pasta but later become a dessert café as well.

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

They have special lunch/dinner combos where you can get a toast, salad/soup, pasta for around $12-16 dollars depending on which pasta you select.

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

Their pasta is always cooked to al dente (perfect chewiness). I especially like their light/clear sauce. Usually toss lightly in a frying pan, great alternative to traditional Italian pasta.

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

I always get a matcha latte from them because they are never sweetened. (Usually how I like my drinks, you can adjust your own liking.)

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

This is a durian cheesecake. It is something that I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS get when I come here. I would not suggest it if you do not like durian (an exotic and strong aroma fruit from Thailand). But being a durian lover, I simply cannot resist it. Smooth, rich in durian flavour. There is nothing not to love about this cake.

I love this cozy quiet family run business, which I always get great service here. Never too too busy, great chat spot if you need to catch up lots.

Glenburn Soda Fountain

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

I had been venturing around my own neighborhood and found many neighborhood gems to visit! This little soda fountain and ice cream store is a sweet sweet memory from the past. The moment you enter, you will instantly think of the song “Milkshake”. Giant ice cream cone display with shelves filled with retro candies from the 80s.Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

(instagram photo :p)

They specialize in fountain soda (which you can pick and choose your flavours just like the old days). They have daily feature flavours and all classic ones to choose from. I had a lavender lemon soda, which I really enjoyed. Light lavender aroma with a kick of citrus and lots of frizz! :3 Reminds me of childhood.Exif_JPEG_PICTURE Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

They also offer local ice cream from Birchwood Dairy and many different types of ice cream treats such as float, egg cream, sundaes, malts and of course milkshake.
Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

This delicious maple pecan fudge sundae was perfect after dinner and satisfy that sweet tooth craving. Topped with lots of whipping cream! 😀 Lots of flavours and texture and warm chocolate syrup at the bottom, oh so yummy.

Exif_JPEG_PICTUREThen also got a salted caramel on a cone, their ice cream is very smooth and creamy. Very classic.

This place is adorable, and great for an ice cream break on a hot summer day (days that we had been getting in Vancouver). I would say this is a heavy for many small children and big adults. Lots of fun and memories just sitting in this little shop.

Cameilla Tea & Coffee

When I first heard that they have opened a cafe near Royal Oak I was so excited. The daughter and son of Accord House has open a dessert cafe next to Royal Oak Skytrain station, as you have read in my previous Accord House posts how much I love their tea and dessert.

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

They opened about couple months ago. Big spacious space  (looks like two stores combined into one), lots of seats and not too close to each other. I visited twice so far since their opening, and I really love this place. They have relatively long hours for cafes in Burnaby, which is one factor I love.

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

Almond croissant, crispy croissant with slices of almonds and sprinkled with icing sugar. They also will reheat/double bake it for you to enjoy it hot. I love hot croissant, such an indulgence.

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

Carrot Pineapple Cupcake – full piece of pineapple in the center of this carrot cake. Gave it moisture, away from the traditional dry carrot cake.

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

Berry Creme Cake – bits of sour berries on top on a creamy pie/cake with flaky pie pastry. My favourite so far.

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

Hazelnut Almond chocolate – this tastes like Ferroro Roche in a cake, oh I loved it! If you are into Ferror Roche, you should try this. This is my favourite next to the Berry Creme Cake (yes I have two favourites. :P)

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

Chocolate Ganache Tart – think heavy chocolate gananche centre on a cripsy tart base, but you’ll be surprise how it is not super hard to poke through like most chocolate gananche tart.

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

They have a decent size of tea selection and many of them which you can make into tea latte. Try their tea latte! By using different types of herbal, black and green tea, their tea latte won’t disappoint you. I have tried many many different flavours from them, ask them to recommend. 🙂

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

Parfait – the very first dessert I had at their original Accord House. Then it made me return again and again to try out their different dessert. Light custard at the bottom topped with fruits and cream and cake bits, they are famous for this. You really need to dig in.

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

Yes this was shared between two girls, but hey dessert is a different stomach right? :p

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

New York Cheesecake – class New York Cheesecake, quite dense but really I like Cheesecake etc. so I am bias. 😛
Exif_JPEG_PICTUREPassion fruit soda with mint – bits of sour berries and sweet passion fruit bubbled up by soda, a very delicious summer drink.

Their desserts did not disappoint me, maybe it is just that they all fit my Asian taste bud. Not too sweet, light and fluffy for the most part. I know their desserts are house made, so if you are unsure of an ingredient you can always ask. Their menu changes once in a while, so there will be always new things to try (which I have yet to discover.) This is a self serve cafe, you order and find a seat and grab your order when it’s ready. I am just so glad that they have opened a cafe! I will visit often like a crazy dessert lady. 😄

Cafe L’Organerie

A Japanese café ran by Japanese, used to be on Grandville but now they have moved in just a little bit away from the big street. I have been to the old location, which you always see if you drive down Grandville. This time my friend suggested couple of us going and I was delighted to visit again at their new location (because I tried to visit last time for dessert but they were closed already).

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE
Rustic is the decoration theme, everything looks and feel like children and things were simple. Wood, handmade, cozy are the feelings that I got when I stepped in. The restaurant gave out a warming home feeling, which is just so adorable.
Exif_JPEG_PICTURE
They have lots of typical Japanese home style dishes such as Japanese style spaghetti, Japanese curry rice, Japanese rice bowls and lots of Japanese desserts such as parfaits and puddings.
Exif_JPEG_PICTURE
Wafu Spaghetti – this is the most Japanese style spaghetti in the menu, I remember eating something similar in Japan and just thought I would try it here again.
Exif_JPEG_PICTURE
Indeed, it was delicious; served in a clean clear sauce (most likely soy sauce) base with bonito and mushrooms, vegetables. I fell in love with this style in Japan and I am so glad I found the flavour again here in Vancouver so I can have it again! :9

Japanese Style Neapolitan Spaghetti– made with ketchup and tomatoe sauce. But unlike other Italian restaurant it is lighter in flavour with less cheese.
Exif_JPEG_PICTURE
Masago de Creamy Spaghetti – creamy tomato sauce with a little bits of masago that gave it a little ‘pop’ to the texture and other seafood.
Exif_JPEG_PICTURE
Curry with Fried Prawn served with Rice
Exif_JPEG_PICTURE
Matcha Greentea Pudding Parfait – my friend thought it’ll be a parfait, but it turned out to be a house made green tea pudding with some mocha and ice cream. But nevertheless it is still very good! The matcha pudding is so rich and smooth!
Exif_JPEG_PICTURE
Black sesame dango parfait – black sesame with chewy mocha and soft café pieces topped with whipping cream. Greatest thing? Not too sweet, my kind of dessert. :3 But mind you the mocha does fill you up, so many save some stomach space during entrée.
Exif_JPEG_PICTURE
Should really try this place out, it was good then and is still good now. You won’t be disappointed and it is definitively something different!

Cafe de l'Orangerie on Urbanspoon

Thierry

After dine out at Black & Blue, I walked across and enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate (because I wasn’t really satisfied by their carrot cake :P). This is the second year I am back for their hot chocolate festival, I remember last year I tried out this rare hot chocolate is was rich, smooth and smooth. Yes I couldn’t get over how smooth their hot chocolate was, I recommend their hot chocolate to many friends because I was absolutely in love with it.

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

This year they have several kinds as usual, I picked the one with ice cream in the middle. I made my friend took pictures of it getting ready as I was hogging a seat (well you know this place is 24/7 busy). An ice cream is put into a clear glass cup with a chocolate disc on top. They will then pour hot chocolate into the cup for you (which I sort of wish we would be doing that ourselves like Chocolate Arts), the presentation is just awesome. How you sort of see them putting the hot chocolate together for you.

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

But I wish was that the hot chocolate was hot enough (like Bella). So I think from that brief description you can tell this hot chocolate was only moderate (or maybe I just expected a little more from Thierry). The hot chocolate was tad bit warmer than luke warm, which made the whole experience pretty bleh. Because really hot chocolate needs to be HOT.

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

They serve with a little cream puff, wasn’t too sweet and is fresh cream. :9

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

Oh how I missed that “One in a Million” hot chocolate from last year. 😥

Sometimes I do feel Thierry is overpriced, but late night and I want dessert and not many choices left I will choose Thierry. (But knowing the amount of people that will be there always stops me…)

I am having a bit sugar overload summer, visited lots of cafes and dessert places. Got so many eating eating and eating for the summer, almost have no time to blog. 😮  But I am being good now and blogging this new place I found nearby my home.

When I entered the cafe, it felt like I went into a different world. What I meant is that it’s so different from the environment outside (Hastings and a used car dealer on the side), I ordered two pieces of cake with a friend and sat by the window and look from a very quiet cafe out onto the busy street of Hastings. Enjoy an hour and a half of pleasant chat. 🙂

Myrtille Vanilla

Myrtille Vanilla

Vanilla Mousse with blueberry sponge cake with blueberry center. This was delicious! I loved it every bit, the soft smooth vanilla mousse with sweet blueberry in the center, the bottom of the cake is a layer of waffle which add texture and crunch to the softness of this cake. Very refreshing and was not overly sweet. Ohh, mouth is watering recalling the taste. 😛

Orange cream with dark chocolate mousse and hazelnut crunch. If you are a chocolate lover you will love this one. Rich dark chocolate mousse with orange cream and crunchy hazelnut made it irresistible.

I am glad I found this place close to home, I would love to try out more cakes from them. However I do have a side note about their customer service…..I would consider take out.

This is a very small store, I entered and saw a lady by the counter right away. However this lady wasn’t very friendly, she seems very unenthusiastic and unwilling to help. I did not see her smile at me the whole entire time I was there – from walking in to ordering to leaving. I know this is a family business, but I think this type of customer service is still unacceptable.

L’Opera Patisserie

I visited this cake shop several times in the last month.  I have to say I quite liked their beautiful decor! It’s perfect for photos. 😀  Tiny little cafe that only fits four tables with the looks of royalty, you do feel a little royal while you are in there. 😉

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

First time I went it was fully packed with tables of high tea services. So the three of us sat at a tiny table right by the entrance ordering individual cakes and macarons to test out.

wpid-dsc_0224

Blueberry Tart with an adorable lady bug chocolate – like their other cakes, every one of them are decorated with care.

wpid-dsc_0223

Mille-Feuille (Napoliean) – Previously I have had napolieans at lots of Asian bakery places and most of the time I don’t like it. Reason is the fluffy pasty is usually inside with cream around and very little fruits and lots of almonds.. and I think you can imagine how soggy the fluffy pastry will become after it sits with the cream for a while. So I sort of had this fear towards napoliean… 😄 But when I saw this one I thought maybe I can give it a try. I did not regret it at all. Napolieans are always messy to eat because the fluffy crispy pastry on the outside usually shatters and this one did too. But I loved the fresh raspberries to divide the pastries not to touch the cream. I loved this!!! wpid-dsc_0222

I ordered their raspberry rose macaron, with a beautiful fragrant of rose and sweets of raspberry in the middle. I absolutely adorable this macaron. What I liked the most, they are not too sweet! I think I just let it out win all macarons that I have had so far. Sorry for cheating. 😛

Second time back for a quick tea with a girlfriend after work, once again I ordered individual cakes.

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

It was a boiling summer afternoon, I just couldn’t get myself to have hot tea even though I drove. So I ordered an iced L’Opera tea – I am not sure is it because I kept poking my lemon so my L’Opera tea that is suppose to have hint of smell of chocolate just tasted like lemon iced tea. 😛
Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

My girlfriend’s Mango Religieuse (they actually have other flavours decorated with different colours)  – basically two pastry dome with flavoured cream inside. The mango flavour is nice and strong.

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

I ordered it again… 😄

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

Blackberries Charlotte – look at the beautiful chocolate butterfly!!! I just love their cute edible decorations on the cake. Blackberry mousse filling layered with sponge cake with lady finger like shell. Oh how come I never tried this cake anywhere else? Delicious mousse filling!

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

Finally I came back for high tea (okay, maybe it is a little obsessive :P) I can kind of see why this place is always so crowded. Their prices are not outrageous for their high tea service ($25.00/person). They have good service, the staffs are friendly and kind.

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

Lots of miniature pastries in their high tea – mini blueberry tarts, caramelized cream puff (surprisingly yummy with the caramelized sugar on top), mille-feuille.

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

I tried out their sesame macaron, equally yummy but I think my favourite is still raspberry rose. :3 The only thing I don’t like is the scone… it was SOOO hard. Like literally hard… I don’t really know what happened there. I will revisit, I just love this little cafe to bits!

Butter Baked Goods & Cafe

When my friend first told me about this place, I got instantly attracted by the name of the cafe. They also have an afternoon tea room which serves afternoon tea service. Which I am excited to try also. 😀

Butter Cafe is quite far away from where I live, but I don’t regret making this trip. The place is adorable and everything had this modern vintage feel to it.

Interior

Was here for a late lunch/tea with friends so we ordered sandwiches, quiche and tart.

Lemon Meringue Tart

I ordered a lemon meringue tart (when I checked the website, I realized that it is a Saturday special unless you order in advance) with butter tea. The tart shell was quite stiff, I made a giant noise trying to crack it open with my fork. 😛 But the lemon curd was sour and refreshing. I loved it! Also loved how it was sort of mini size.

Butter Tea

Their sandwiches, soup and quiche are changed daily so whatever is in season and whatever they feel like making! Which I think it’s great, because if you revisit often. You can always try out different things.

Quiche of the Day

I took a small bite out of my friend’s quiche of the day, very delicious. Quiche tends to scare me because most ones I try elsewhere are very oily. These were perfect.

Ham and BrieHam and brie on rye. I am sure there are many people out there who doesn’t enjoy rye because they tend to be drier and rougher. But I think brie and rye are such perfect match to each other.

LatteAll drinks are served with a tiny cookie that goes well with your drink. Which I find very cute also.

I would love to try out their tea room for afternoon tea service soon!!

Tealips Bubble Tea & Coffee

I kept hearing about this place, and for some really odd reason I kept thinking it is by Burnaby Public Library but it is REALLY far away from Burnaby Public library. 😛 This waffle/bubble tea shop is near Edmonds High Gate Plaza (behind it actually). It was a nice October day, still had the remaining summer warmth and the beautiful sunshine, made this area feels so nice.

Three girls chatting over tea an waffles on a very nice afternoon, I was enjoying this waffle place in Burnaby. It’s just such a pleasant area to enjoy some tea and waffles. 🙂

So to share between the three of us, we ordered two different types of waffles:

Matcha red bean on Brussels waffles – also had some mochi and vanilla ice cream. This waffles are very fluffy indeed, and I especially like the chewy mochi on the waffles. 🙂

Mixed berry on Liege waffle – well this it was suppose to be. But they didn’t have any other berries left except strawberries and for some reason we got the brussels waffle. So now it is a Strawberry whipped cream brussels waffle. 😄 But regardless it was still good, though I wish I get to try the leige waffle!

You can also see this purply milky drink in the background. It was my lavender tea latte – though I sort of felt like she put milk and lavender together and gave it to me… It was not a good drink at all. Did I order it wrong? But when I make tea latte at home, it is much different than this.

This is their BLT sandwich combo, with house green quinoa salad. They also have other sandwiches and shave ice on the menu.

I will give this place one more try and hopefully everything will run smoothly next time.

This little dessert place not very noticeable but I didn’t regret going in. It was a very quite cafe that serves herb tea, bubble tea, and sweet soup dessert. It is rare to find a sweet soup dessert place in Vancouver. Only two girls work there, which I believe are also the store owner.

We ordered the red bean sweet soup with taro. I was impressed and pleased. With the price I pay I get this decent size sweet soup with lots of fresh taro. Wasn’t overily sweet, but I truly enjoyed it.

The other item we ordered is grass jelly with fresh mango topped with evaporated milk. Mangoes are sweet and fresh. Again decent portion.

I like this place, they also open late for late night cravings.
